A toddler is recovering after ingesting what police believe to be fentanyl.

On Dec. 30, emergency crews were called to a home in North Point Douglas, where they found a child in medical distress. The toddler was transported to hospital in critical condition and after several doses of Narcan, was stabilized.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Child Abuse Unit launched an investigation and determined that the child inadvertently ingested a substance believed to be fentanyl while they were crawling on the floor.

A 28-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing a charge of causing bodily harm by criminal negligence. He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code and is prohibited from attending the child’s residence.
