A man has been detained in custody after assaulting two police officers.

Members of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) responded to a residence in the 100 block of Guay Avenue after receiving reports of people fighting on July 7, 2019.

Upon arrival at around 8:45 a.m., police located a man lying on the front steps of the residence. Those in the home indicated that the man had been injured.

Officers tried to check the man when he became violent. A police officer was charged by the man and knocked to the ground before the man attempted to take the officer's firearm. Police say that a conducted electrical weapon ("Taser") was used to bring the man into custody.

He was taken to hospital and later spit in an officer's face.

The male has been identified as Joey Wesley Sumner, 29, and has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer, as well as resisting a peace officer and disarming a peace officer. He has been detained in custody.
