An investigation is underway following a shooting involving a Steinbach RCMP officer.

Steinbach RCMP responded to Highway 52 near La Broquerie at around 12:30 a.m. after reports of a suspicious male in the area.
The officers quickly spotted a vehicle stopped on the highway and saw a man standing by the driver's side door.

As officers approached, they saw the man reach inside the vehicle and assault the female driver. Police ordered the man to step away. He then began walking towards the officers with a weapon. After countless orders to drop the weapon, the suspect continued to ignore the officers and kept walking toward them at which point one of them discharged their firearm.

The officers provided medical care until emergency crews arrived. However, the 51-year-old man from the St. Anne area was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver sustained minor injuries from the assault.

RCMP Major Crime Services has taken over the police investigation. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is also providing oversight.

Highway 52 remains closed as the investigation continues. A detour is in place.
