A man has died after being stabbed during an altercation last week.

Winnipeg police say the altercation between the man and an unknown suspect took place around 9:10 p.m. on Sept. 23 in front of a home on Kate Street.

A weapon was produced during the incident and the victim was stabbed.

The victim, 18, was taken to hospital. He died two days later.

The Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the deceased or who may have knowledge of the incident has been asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Rob Carver, public information officer for the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says police are also asking businesses in the area to check their security cameras for around the time of the incident to see if they may be able to contribute footage to assist in the investigation.

When asked about the delay in releasing information about the case, which occurred last week, Carver told reporters they had received information from officers in the homicide unit and had put their release together for Monday as a result.

"Oftentimes when we announce that there's been a homicide, we'll wait a couple of days before we make an appeal to the public," Carver says. "That's kind of what's happened here."

Carver says few details have been released on the incident to help protect the integrity of the investigation.
