The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating after a traffic stop turned fatal.

At around 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday, the Winnipeg Police Service attempted to conduct a traffic stop near Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive.

Police say the occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene, and an officer was pinned by the suspect vehicle.

One of the officer's firearm was discharged, striking the adult male driver.

The man was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The officer pinned by the vehicle was injured and transported to hospital in stable condition.

A female passenger remains in police custody at this time.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
