A 31-year-old man is facing charges after creating a drug-fueled situation requiring a tactical unit on Tuesday afternoon.

A man, believed to be experiencing drug intoxication, was reported to be in the 900 block of Empress Street, acting vertically with a baseball bat.

The Winnipeg Police Service responded, finding him inside of an Ellice Avenue business in the 1300 block. The man, now doused in lighter fluid, became agitated and refused to put down his baseball bat.

Over the course of 25 minutes, police attempted to convince the man to put his bat down but were unsuccessful.

During this time, the man injected what he says was methamphetamine.

The man then asked officers to shoot him, producing a lighter and motioning that he will light it.

Soon after the man began asking to be shot, the Tactical Support Team arrived, and used a "less-than-lethal projectile," successfully taking the man into custody.

While the man was uninjured, he was taken to hospital and treated for drug intoxication.

The Winnipeg Police Service says they believe methamphetamine played a role in the incident.

A 31-year-old man is now facing two charges: Possession of a Weapon and Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment.
