A Winnipeg man is in police custody after police allege he took a "large machete" and threatened students and staff on the University of Winnipeg's downtown campus.

The Winnipeg Police Service says they were called around 8:15 on Thursday morning to the 500 block of Portage Avenue. The initial report said "a male armed with a large machete (was) threatening students and security personnel. After exiting the property, security personnel followed the male suspect to the Axworthy Health and RecPlex located in the 300 block of Spence Street."

General Patrol officers from the Central District responded to the call and located the suspect inside RecPlex, still armed with a machete.

The WPS says the man dropped the machete at the officer’s direction before being safely placed under arrest after a brief struggle. Officers seized the machete as evidence, and no injuries were reported.

Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect threatened students and security personnel by swinging the machete aggressively and gesturing a physical attack.
