There is no need to reel in enthusiasm for this year's fishing season, according to the Recreation Fishing Manager for Manitoba.

Katherine Ward, the Recreation Fishing Manager for Manitoba says she is glad to see people excited to fish this summer.

"I think our great weather and the many lakes and rivers that we have in Manitoba bring people outdoors as well as the fantastic fishing," she says. "We have world-class fishing."

With over 110,000 lakes across the province, fishing is a popular pastime regardless of the level of skill.

"There are a lot of people who go out fishing and do not catch, but they just enjoy being outdoors and being with family and friends when it is safe to do so."

Before casting, fishers will need to know what they can and cannot fish. Ward says the Angler's Guide has information regarding this as well as calling the conservation office at 1-877-880-1203. She also recommends seeking the advice of other anglers.

"You can also ask other anglers if you are fishing near other people if you are not sure."

Ward says there are new regulations fishers need to be aware of, including limiting catching drum fish to only 10 and new yellow perch limits. Wade adds that in the Angler's Guide they also highlight important information regarding invasive species.

After fishing, Wade is reminding visitors to clean their areas as they leave their spots.

"Make sure you clean up after yourself and take away anything you bring."

Before heading out, Ward says it is important to give travel details to someone and to pack for the weather.
