A six-year-old boy is safe at home after going missing earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the Winnipeg Police Service was alerted that a six-year-old boy had run off and gone missing near the 600 block of Oakenwalkd Avenue in Fort Garry.

Numerous police resources were dispatched, including the West District General Patrol, River Patrol, Cadets and the Drone Unit.

Police quickly learned that the child had an attraction to water and initiated an extensive search, which included the riverbank.

Members of the River Patrol located the child in the water a few blocks away near the 600 block of South Drive. A River Patrol officer jumped into the water and rescued the child, who police say appeared to be moments away from being submerged.

The child was safely returned to his caregivers.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the community for their support during this incident.
