A 27-year-old woman is facing a manslaughter charge after the death of her two-month-old son.

The Winnipeg Police Service says in a release that emergency personnel were called to a home in the 600 block of Atlantic Avenue on December 4, 2023, due to an unresponsive infant.

Both police and crews from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the call. They found a two-month-old boy at the house and pronounced him deceased at the scene.

The WPS' Child Abuse Unit entered into an investigation regarding the sudden death of the infant.

On Feb. 9, 2024, the WPS sent out a release saying that autopsy reports had determined that the newborn's death was a result of malnutrition.

The Child Abuse Unit consulted with the Manitoba Prosecution Service, which authorized the charge of Manslaughter against the parent.

On February 8, 2024, investigators arrested the mother, a 27-year-old woman from Winnipeg, and charged her with Manslaughter.

She has been detained in custody. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
