The Lord Selkirk School Division has started a campaign focused on the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.

The "Think of Us on the Bus" campaign has been developed to keep students safe by addressing the problem of traffic passing school buses while their red lights and stop signs are activiated.

Lord Selkirk School Division (LSSD) was aware of the issue, but didn't realize how much it happened. Based on survey's from LSSD, there was an average of 36 traffic violations involving passing a school bus every single day.

While the statistics come from the division specifically, LSSD says the problem exists throughout North America.

According the campaign website, all LSSD school buses will be outfitred with Red Light/Stop Arm cameras that can identify vehicles when they violate a school bus. A ticket for a school bus violation results in a $673 fine and 2 demerits off your license. With kids running around the bus, the result could be even worse.

LSSD says their goal is not to issue tickets, but to get people to stop for school buses and students. The school division doesn't get any revenue from the tickets and incurred all the costs for the camera systems. Their ultimate hope is that they never need to use the cameras.
