The demand for COVID-19 testing in Manitoba has nearly doubled overnight.

One new case of COVID-19 has been identified as of 9:30 a.m Thursday, bringing Manitoba's total to 375.

Today’s case is a male in his 40s from the Interlake-Eastern health region. The investigation is ongoing. When completed, additional information will be provided as needed to inform people of any public health risks.

The data also shows:

-one individual is in intensive care,
-49 active cases and 319 individuals have recovered from COVID-19, and
-the number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains at seven.

An additional 1,262 laboratory tests were performed on Wednesday, bringing the total number of tests performed since early February to 79,546.

Manitoba's Chief Public Health Officer Brent Roussin says testing demand had diminished in recent weeks before doubling almost overnight.

However, he says despite an uptick in cases, the test positivity rate remains low. Updated data analysis shows revisions are required to the five-day test positivity rates that were provided earlier this week. The revised data shows the rate was 0.66 per cent on July 20 (not 0.83 per cent), 0.8 per cent on July 21 (not 1.03 per cent) and 0.85 per cent on July 22 (not 1.12 per cent).

"We're certainly aware that Manitobans are concerned with the recent higher numbers... this is not unexpected. We're going to be dealing with this virus for quite some time," Roussin says, adding the vast majority of recent cases have been related to clusters or to travel. In the last week only a single case can't be linked to another cluster or travel.
