Tammy Junghans recently felt a nudge in her heart to help feed those during these tough COVID times. It turns out that nudge happened for a reason, as two foodbanks in her area are shutting down.

There will be no lag in food going to families, students, refugees or the eldery in need, as Tammy is starting a new food bank out of the church her and her husband Greg started.

“I just had this inkling in my heart when things started to shut down that maybe there’s an increased need in the area due to jobs and businesses closing.” Says Tammy, a University of Manitoba student.

Her and Greg started a church right across the street from the University five years ago, called Converge Community Church.

She says, “I called Winnipeg Harvest just to see if they needed an emergency food distribution center. They said that the food bank in our area is closing and they’ve been trying to find a place and haven’t had any success. They asked if we would consider opening up a food bank.”

The foodbank at the Fort Richmond Baptist church is shutting down at the end of June. Plus, the University of Manitoba’s student's union has also had to close their food bank for U of M students due to COVID restrictions.

“We were volunteers at the food bank that was already in Fort Richmond. The church has been running it for a number of years and they’ve done such a good job. They felt like it wasn’t the time to continue it.” Shares Tammy.
