They forewent the traditional ribbon-cutting, instead having a book-shelving at the official opening of Windsor Park's new library.

The new 8,000 square foot library is located at 1195 Archibald Street, right next to Bonivital Pool.

Renelle Allard-Parent says her family lives in the area, and they love books, so they were curious to check out the new library.

"We have three kids... they love to read. We read one book, at least, every day... something that I'm very passionate about is reading. I think that's how kids learn and develop. We find different adventures in books," she says.

Allard-Parent says the old one on Cottonwood Road wasn't as inviting as this one.

"(The new location) is about as close to our place as the other one was, but it's much more open, it's bright and inviting," says Allard-Parent.

Over the last two weeks, 25,000 items -- including books, movies, music and more -- have been moved from the former library to the new location. The old one was built in 1961.

A maze-like mosaic adorns one of the new library's walls. It's designed by Winnipeg-based artist Simon Hughes.

"Basically, I was trying to represent the process of if you learn through a book, it's kind of like solving a maze, right? So I came up with the imagery of a maze to kind of represent an idea traveling through your brain and coming out the other side as something new," says Hughes.

His piece is called Tributaries. It also references waterways, suburban development, a crocus, teepees, and more. Hughes says he wanted the work to be rooted in the area.
