A former Mountie will not serve jail time for his actions during a police chase that ended with the shooting death of a man in northern Manitoba.

Abram Letkeman was sentenced yesterday for criminal negligence causing bodily harm for his driving before the 2015 death of Steven Campbell outside Thompson.

The former constable, who was given a medical discharge from RCMP in December, was found guilty of the driving offences in August but acquitted of manslaughter and other shooting-related charges.

The court heard that Letkeman suspected Campbell of impaired driving and pursued the vehicle without alerting supervisors or calling backup. Campbell fled in his vehicle until it came to a stop on an ATV trail in some brush. Letkeman t-boned Campbell's jeep and then walked in front of it.

Campbell's vehicle drove towards Letkeman and the officer fired into the vehicle. Campbell's girlfriend, Lori Flett, was also struck by bullets and suffered a broken pelvis and is also now deaf in one ear.

Campbell's family says that they cannot forgive Letkeman. “Steven would be alive today if you would have followed policy and not taken matters into your own hands,” says his father, Robert Campbell.

“Shame on you again. I pray this matter haunts you for the rest of your life as it does us.”

Justice Chris Martin sentenced Letkeman to three years probation, 240 hours of community service and fined him 10,000 dollars.
