A 42-year-old man is in custody after biting a police officer and attempting to bite a second officer.

The Winnipeg Police Service says officers responded to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Kennedy Street at around 11:30 p.m. for a report of an adult male acting erratically, causing a disturbance and being aggressive toward people.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located a man outside of the building showing signs of being agitated due to alleged drug use. Due to his erratic, unpredictable behaviour, officers attempted to place him in handcuffs for everyone's safety.

While attempting to handcuff the man, he bit one officer, resulting in a minor injury, and attempted to bite a second. Several tenants from the building also began throwing items from balconies, including a piece of carry-on luggage.  No one was struck.

The man was transported to hospital in stable condition, where he was treated and released. The injured officer was also treated in hospital.

A 42-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing charges of Assault Peace Officer x 2, Resist Peace Officer, and Fail to Comply with Conditions of Release Order x 2.

He remains in custody.
