A fire that broke out in a Rossmere home is suspected to have been started due to a cooking incident.

This afternoon at 12:17, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire alarm in a  single-family home in the 800 block of Kildonan Drive.

Once arriving at the one-storey house, crews discovered a partially-extinguished fire.

The fire was then fully-extinguished by fire crews. One person was sent to the hospital in stable condition.

The WFPS believes that the fire was started due to cooking and are sharing the following strategies to avoid cooking fires:

  • always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time
  • anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop
  • oil should always be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire

No damage estimates are available at this time.
