An inner-city ministry is getting a big boost from the community thanks to blueberry and coconut cream pie, and some generous Winnipeggers who have an obvious sweet tooth.
Living Bible Explorers held its first-ever pie auction and an open house on Monday evening. Executive Director Cher Paulson says it was a big success, with just over $12,000 raised in total.
"It was so great, just having a night of community and fun," she says. It was the first time the West End ministry had tried an event like this and so organizers weren't quite sure what to expect. Pauls says people enjoyed coming early for a BBQ and getting to see the building and learn more about the ministry. But, it was at 6 p.m. when the real fun began and the ministry auctioned off 42 sweet treats, including pies, butter tarts, and cakes.
Some of the highlights of the auction included a dozen of Paulson's mother's butter tarts being auctioned off for nearly $500, a blueberry pie that went for $700, and a coconut cream pie that went for $1,000.
"It was just such a great night and the Lord helped us," she says. "We were able to end the night in prayer for the community of the West End and that more families, kids, and teens would come to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour. That's why we do what we do."
Paulson says that they're already looking forward to their next fundraiser, which will take place on Sep. 28 at Grant Memorial Church.
The ministry has been around since 1969. Over the years, LBE’s ministries have evolved to include weekly programs for Grades 1-12, Lunch Club, Drop-Ins, Teens Nights, Family Retreats, and Summer Camps. "God continues to call individuals to serve as both staff and volunteers, and the work of LBE continues to reach children, youth, and families in Winnipeg’s inner city with the Good News of Jesus," its website says.
