The Winnipeg Police Services (WPS) says they have made an arrest after a fire destroyed one home Friday morning, and has left another family uncertain about their home.

Constable Jay Murray, a public information officer with the WPS, told reporters on Saturday morning that a 17-year-old girl has been arrested for arson, as well as a number of other charges.

Murray says that police arrested the female at 7:20 p.m. last night. Police believe that three people had gathered at the house, and were drinking and using drugs. A fight arose over a $10 payment, and the suspect was ejected from the home. She returned by breaking a window and deliberately set a fire. Murrays says that they believe the female was not a resident of the home but visiting.

There were other people in the house, who police believe were not involved in the altercation. All people were able to safely exit the building, which was eventually completely destroyed by the fire.

It was one of those people that escaped from the home that alerted their neighbour, John Donovan, to the fire and the danger posed to his house. The Donovan family was able to safely exit their home as well, and the extent of damage is still unknown.

Murray says that the female has been charged with:

- Break Enter & Commit Arson - Dwelling House
- Arson Causing Damage to Property
- Arson with Disregard for Human Life (x5)
- Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Fail to Comply with Sentence (x2)
