With kids heading back to school, we asked the police for some safety tips for both pedestrians and drivers.

School starts across Manitoba this week and the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) wants you to stay safe, whether you're on a bike or behind the wheel.

Constable Chris Wingfield, a Collision Analyst with the WPS, says that school zones are now in effect and must be observed. Those zones are in effect from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and bring the speed limit to 30 km/h.

As a pedestrian, Wingfield says you should be using the sidewalks when available. When there are none, you should be walking properly on the road.

"That includes walking single file, walking approaching traffic and be very aware of your surroundings."

One question parents might have is about biking to school. While it's illegal for adults to bike on a sidewalk, Wingfield says that is not the case for kids.

"I would suggest that, with kids, it's more prudent for them to ride on the sidewalks. It would be safer that way."

Wingfield says that drivers also have a responsibility to be aware of their surroundings as school starts up. That means looking for things you might not normally.

"A little tip I have is look under parked vehicles while driving," Wingfield said. "Because you can see little feet and if you see those feet, slow right down."

Finally, the WPS says that passing a school bus with the lights out at anytime can result in heavy fines and deductions on your drivers license.
