Crews are working to demolish a building that was destroyed by fire earlier this week, and that means a stretch of southbound Main St. will remain closed.

Fire crews were called to the three-storey building near Jarvis Avenue just after midnight on Tuesday. The Winnipeg Police Service says the fire started in Pawndora's Box pawn shop at 808 Main St. and then spread to the neighbouring building which was abandoned.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says that the building became unsafe as the fire spread, with walls beginning to collapse.

The building was deemed a total loss and crews have been working to take it down and remove debris.

The City of Winnipeg says southbound Main St. is closed between Dufferin Ave. and Sutherland Ave. while the work is carried out. While the City doesn't know how long the cleanup might take, it does say to expect it to last several days.
