Providence University College held their 'Day of Prayer' and the focus was on the natural disasters, many of which have affected their students.

Providence has students from many different countries and backgrounds, which is why they felt praying about the natural disasters that have happened around the world was the right thing to do.

"As I was preparing, I was thinking about what was on our schools heart," said Laura Friesen, VP of Spiritual Life. "[Our international students] are often affected by international disasters."

Friesen says it can be hard for them to deal with it, because their friends and family are being affected, and often, they are the only one from their country.

"I thought it was important that we shed light on what's happening in their country and what can we pray for," Friesen said. "Because sometimes, we just don't know."

A few students shared their experiences, either direct or through what they have heard and felt from their family and friends. One student's family was in the area of Mexico that the earthquake hit two weeks ago, while his friends were near Mexico City when the earthquake hit recently.

Another student is from Houston and was evacuated when Hurricane Harvey hit. She shared her story with fellow classmates as part of the day.

"Prayer is a tool that we can use as a community," Friesen said. "We can't always go and help financially [or physically], but we can be here and we can come together.

"I think that is the best tool that we can offer, the emotional support and the encouragement."
