For the first time in seven years, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) Half Marathon in support of The Heart and Stroke Foundation is being called off due to unsafe weather conditions caused by last week's storm.

The WFPS half marathon has been advised by the City of Winnipeg to cancel the annual event after last week's snowstorm left the racecourse in a dangerous state. On the route, power lines and fallen trees block the way sporadically.

They would like to reassure all participants that this is not their ideal choice but the safest. "Safety is our first priority for our participants and volunteers. While this decision was not an easy one to make, we know we have to do what's best for our community," Race Director, Jonathan Torchia says.

This year would have marked the eighth annual WFPS Run. All proceeds received in support of the race this year will continue to be donated to the foundation, no refunds will be issued. The WFPS encourages everyone to also continue to donate despite the setback.

An alternative race date will not be announced but runners may participate in a virtual race that will be launched soon.

In an attempt to utilize all other aspects of the race preparation, WFPS will allow participants to pick up their race kits, award a 'top fundraiser', and they will donate the food prepared for the race to a local charity.

"We love our runners, we love our volunteers, we love our community. You need to know how committed we are to you and your experience. We will be back stronger and better than ever in year 9," Torchia says.
