A 27-year-old man is in custody after officers discovered him leaving a crime scene on foot, ditching a stolen vehicle in the process.

Police say a 77-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman are the victims of a double homicide that took place at a house on River Road in the RM of Tache.

They say when St. Pierre RCMP officers were called to the home at 1:15 a.m. Thursday it was about a disturbance. They then determined it was a break-and-enter at the rural home.

At the scene, neighbours told officers there was a suspicious man, the information they quickly acted on.

"Officers immediately conducted a patrol and located and arrested an adult male on foot, on Highway 59," RCMP Manitoba says in a statement.

One kilometre away, officers found a stolen vehicle they are linking to the suspect at the intersection of Highway 59 and Provincial Trunk Highway 210. The vehicle now in police evidence.

The 27-year-old from Steinbach is being charged with two counts of Second Degree Murder and is in court.

RCMP continues to say the connection between the suspect and victims is unknown.

"In terms of how they knew each other, that piece of the puzzle is still being examined," Sergeant Paul Manaigre said on Thursday.
