A Portage la Prairie officer is being charged with careless driving after hitting a suspect on a bicycle with his cruiser.

On January 14, 2020, The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) concluded its investigation into an injury to a 33- year-old male during his arrest by a member of the Portage la Prairie RCMP in July of 2019.

The RCMP Officer is reported to have used his cruiser car to knock down a suspect riding a bicycle.

The 33-year-old suspect was the subject of a disturbance call at a Portage residence on July 17, 2019. As he fled the scene the officer struck the suspect at a low speed.

The male was transported to hospital. Although there were no serious injuries, the IIU began an investigation.

As a result of the investigation, one officer has been issued a Provincial Offence Act ticket for driving carelessly.

This charge is now being discussed in court.
