Despite being in a potentially deadly situation, authorities say no injuries occurred after a rural shooting.

On Tuesday afternoon near Moosehorn in the RM of Grahamdale, a community approximately 13 kilometres north of Ashern, police received a report of a lone male threatening violence.

At 2:45 p.m., officers from RCMP detachments in Lundar and Ashern were told a 25-year-old man was on a rural property and threatening to shoot police.

The man stood alone on the property with a loaded rifle and a significant amount of ammunition.

“Our officers are in dangerous situations day in and day out, but when a firearm is involved, it takes that danger to another level,"  Inspector Chris Moore, Incident Commander says.

Calling out to the man over a loudspeaker, officers asked the man to put down the rifle. That is when the shooting began.

Intentionally shooting into the general direction of the officers, RCMP members took cover.

While trying to talk to the man, officers say they discovered he was intoxicated and very agitated. Police say they tried again to get the man to put his weapon down.

Still shooting, the man ran eventually out of ammunition at around 5:30 p.m.

Police say they were then able to safely arrest him and place him in a police vehicle.

"RCMP officers did not fire their weapons at any point during the incident. No RCMP officers were injured, and no civilians were in danger throughout the event," RCMP Manitoba says in a statement.

During the arrest, the man was not injured and was taken to the hospital to be examined. He was then released and is now in police custody.

“This situation was resolved safely with no injuries, and I am very grateful for that,” Moore says. "The training these officers receive as well as the genuine concern they have for the people of their community kept this incident from escalating and allowed for a peaceful resolution.”

The 25-year-old is now facing charges of Possession of a Firearm Knowing it is Unauthorized, Discharge with Intent x3, Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Court Order. RCMP say other charges are being considered.

RCMP Manitoba says the investigation is continuing with the assistance of the RCMP Forensic Identification Section in Winnipeg.
