Environment Canada has added several communities to a snowfall warning for Thursday, including Winkler, Morden, Altona, Portage la Prairie, and Brandon.

A low pressure weather system over the American Midwest will continue to bring snow and strengthening winds to southern Manitoba today and tonight.

Most areas of southern Manitoba will see some snow. Regions in the interlake and the northern Red River Valley are likely to see heavy snowfall from lake effect streamers off of Lake Manitoba. These streamers produce narrow bands of heavy snow with very poor visibility. Potentially these streamers could produce over 30 cm of snow in some localities in the interlake.

Winnipeg will likely see 10 to 15 cm of snow today and tonight. Much of this will originate from Lake Winnipeg.

As well snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are expected to develop along the Manitoba escarpment along the western edge of the Red River Valley later today and through the night. The heavy snow will be localized to this geography.

In addition to the snow, winds will strengthen and gusts of 70 or 80 km/h are expected late today and into the night giving some blustery conditions at times.

The low pressure system will move away Friday and the snow and wind will ease early Friday morning.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
