An investment of $130 million is being put into Winnipeg road construction projects this spring, creating more jobs for Manitobans.

Close to 200 projects will be commencing this summer in Winnipeg in partnership with the Province of Manitoba and Government of Canada.

The annual construction, set to begin next month, will be putting tens of millions of dollars towards the repair of roads, back lanes, and sidewalks.

“We have invested in projects to help build our communities and efforts are being made to safely maintain transportation networks so residents can get where they are needed. We will get through this together,” Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities says.

Over 175 lane kilometres are in the works to be improved.

The city says the construction will add to the economy with 85 per cent of the planned construction jobs already being tendered to businesses.

“The start of road construction season is always an exciting time because it signals the flow of capital funding dollars into our economy,” Mayor Brian Bowman says. “Against the backdrop of the global pandemic and the effect it has had on our economy, this is an especially important road construction season for jobs and our city’s economy.”

The City hopes that the construction will help improve the local economy after seeing the dramatic dip the COVID-19 pandemic caused.
