Authorities say Major Crimes is investigating two incidents where a man walked up to women in vehicles, spraying them with a bear-spray-like substance.

On Saturday, police say a woman was parked in the 700 block of Main Street at around 4:30 p.m. when she was approached. A man walked up to her open window, asking for a cigarette. She looked for one, but when she raised her head, police say the suspect sprayed her with a substance they believe was either bear spray or something similar.

Minutes later down the road near Higgins Avenue and Main Street, a second woman was stopped at a traffic light. Her passenger window was partially open, with her purse on the seat beside her. Police say the same suspect walked up to the car and reached in, grabbing the bag. The woman tried to roll up the window, but the suspect prayed her in the face. The man then fled on foot.

Police say they have video footage of the suspect. They say he has a distinct gait and arm and upper body tattoos. At the time he was smoking and wearing a backpack and baseball cap.

Those with information are being asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
