One of Winnipeg's most beloved dogs has died at the age of 17.

Rusty the therapy dog's owner made the announcement on the dog's Facebook page Tuesday evening.

Writing as Rusty, they say the dog died on Tuesday, one day after his 17th birthday, in Arizona where the family winters.

"Hi friends, it’s me Rusty. I’m up here in Doggie Heaven. I crossed over that famous Rainbow Bridge today (google that term just for fun).

"Right after my birthday yesterday, my inoperable mouth cancer suddenly spread to my front leg and lungs and hit me harder than I expected. I couldn’t eat or stand."

Rusty was well known at St. Boniface Hospital where he greeted patients and visitors while wearing a pair of glasses. Along with his owner, George Ames, Rusty volunteered over 2,000 hours of his time at the hospital brightening people's day. Rusty retired in November 2019.

"My wish and hope is that all of you will do me a favour," the Facebook announcement says. "I would like you to follow my example and work diligently in your careers, keep a positive attitude, and always smile at other people. It worked for me. They will smile back at you, trust me, I know what I’m talking about!"

The Ameses write that they hope Rusty's life will inspire other owners and their dogs "to get involved with pet therapy volunteering. The demand is there, and the rewards are too."
