A nine-year-old boy last seen in distress in the Red River has still not been located by first responders, but police say they're not giving up hope yet.

An individual needing assistance was reported to be near the Louise Bridge just after 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Police say some children who live nearby were riding their bikes and made their way down to the Red River where at least one child was seen in the water.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services (WFPS) responded to the distress call and members of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) joined the rescue efforts soon after.

The individual was identified as nine-year-old Darius Bezecki, says WPS Constable Jay Murray.

Police conducted searches with numerous units downstream to gather visuals while WFPS water rescue units were deployed.

The WFPS drone was also sent out and employed thermal imaging technology in the search.
