A Winnipeg Police marked cruiser was stolen early this morning in the course of a serious incident, police say.

Around 2:30 a.m. today, Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers on general patrol came across a stolen vehicle.

Significant police resources, including the assistance of the Air1 police helicopter, were utilized to track the vehicle to a Headingley gas bar. According to police, the incident escalated to the point where a WPS marked cruiser car was stolen by one of the suspects.

Police say that throughout the situation, police ensured and secured the safety of several citizens in the area.

The suspect was arrested by RCMP and WPS officers in the area of the TransCanada Highway and PTH 26.

Due to the seriousness of the incident and the large amount of police resources required, Police say that more than 300 calls for service await dispatch at this time. The WPS says they will continue to triage calls received based on priority and thank the public for their patience throughout the incident.

Police have said that more information will be released at noon today.
