A municipality on the shores of Lake Winnipeg is asking people to stay off the ice after several people were rescued over the weekend.

The RM of St. Clements put out the plea on Sunday evening saying that vehicles had gotten stuck on the ice or gone through.

The fire department out of Grand Marais, East Beaches Fire and Rescue, had been trying to get the stranded ice fishers off safely. However, others who continued to drive on to the ice made that difficult.

One truck hauling a camper went through the ice. According to witnesses, the truck was safely removed, although the camper was not.

Another truck in the area ended up going under the water.

There were no injuries reported, although two people ended up in the water. They were able to safely get out and were treated

The Lifesaving Society of Manitoba recommends that ice be at least 20 - 30 centimetres think before taking small automobiles on to the ice, and 30 - 38 centimetres for trucks.
