As businesses close and streets sit empty during rush hour, changing your car insurance could be a small cost-saving option.

Keenan Reimer from Lakeview Insurance shares that it is important to keep up with your vehicle insurance even if it is not being used to drive to work.

"All Province of Manitoba services are moving on as is, with Autopac being one of them," Reimer says.

Vehicles are still being used for grocery store trips, bank visits, and even prayer meetings despite the pandemic.

Drivers can switch to pleasure insurance as they work from home, but Reimer says for the time being the temporary switch may not be worth the hassle for the average driver.

"It is not a huge saving, but it is a little bit, especially if you've just been laid off," Reimer says.

The average driver would save $10 to $20 a month in insurance rates.

As for paying for license renewals and other services, Reimer says most insurance services can be done by phone.

"You won't be able to find somewhere to (pay for insurance) in person, but our staff are more than capable of helping you out through the phone and over email," he says. "It is business as usual... just the way we do business is a little bit different."

As for in-person services such as changes to driver's license photos or change of address, Reimer suggests holding off for the time being until it is required.
