One of Winnipeg's largest homeless shelters hosted its annual Christmas meal on Christmas Eve this year.
Siloam Mission welcomed approximately 600 people to their Princess St. location, and another 85 to their Madison House location for their annual Christmas meal on Monday afternoon.
"Many of the people who come here are coming from a place where they might not have a family they can enjoy a meal with or maybe don't have the resources to put on this type of meal for their families," Siloam Mission communications manager Luke Thiessen said. "This meal always feels different, the atmosphere in the room is very family-oriented, we see people bring their kids in and it just feels special and it's important to give that to people who are experiencing poverty or homelessness."
Thiessen says the annual Christmas dinner is also a way for them to go a little bit further for the people they serve.
"Rather than have them come through the line to get food at the counter we are able to serve them at their seats and make it more of a special meal," Thiessen said. "There is Christmas decorations, table cloths and cutlery at the tables that are a little bit nicer than what we would have for a regular meal."
Thiessen says right now Siloam Mission is in need of donations of fresh produce and warm clothes. That is in addition to monetary donations, which they always accept.
