This year's drama at Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary and Middle School (WMEMS) promises to be unlike anything you've seen before.

Every year, WMEMS Bedson Campus puts together a theatre production. This year, the school tackles the classic story of Snow White. However, this version is quite different than the one you know and love.

"Definitely a bit of a twist," joked Sheri Kovacs, drama teacher at WMEMS.

The Snow White Variety Show is a fun take on the fairy tale, featuring a whole new cast of dwarves. The dwarves, Rowdy, Howdy, Weepy, Nerdy, Wordy, Creepy, and Bob, tell the story from their own unique perspectives.

The student portraying Snow White is really excited about the opportunity.

"It's just so fun because you get to become a different character and do something you wouldn't normally do," Snow White said.

Many of the students are taking on roles that don't always fit their actual personality, but Kovacs believes that it helps bring kids out of their shells.

"Usually, I like to smile more," laughed Creepy.

Rowdy is not a rowdy student at all and had trouble finding a costume since it's a very different character. But he's excited to explore the untapped side of himself. The Huntsman is also playing a different character and one that he does not recognize in the Snow White story.

"I've never been on a stage, so I can't say if I have stage fright yet," the Huntsman smiled. "I'm very excited."

One kid playing the same character is Weepy, who said "I can be quite dramatic" at home and with her friends.

"It's really fun, you get to make a lot of memories," she continued. "It's so much fun spending time with your friends and doing all this cool stuff."

Kovacs understands the importance of putting together productions like this and is excited for these kids to take the stage.

"Some students are really shy but when it comes to drama, they become a different person on stage," Kovacs said. "It's an outlet for kids."

WMEMS will host the Snow White Variety Show on Wednesday, April 11 and Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are just $5 and the show will take place at their Bedson campus.
