Update 3:39 p.m. - several areas are now under freezing rain or snowfall warnings. Details on our app, or here: https://chvnradio.com/articles/freezing-rain-and-snowfall-warnings-issued-as-storm-sets-sights-on-manitoba

All of southern Manitoba is under a special weather statement Saturday morning, as a low pressure system in Alberta heads east. Environment Canada says that widespread freezing rain and heavy snowfall is a strong possibility for Sunday.

The system is currently building in western Alberta, where several freezing rain warnings are in effect.

Environment Canada says that due to mild temperatures associated with the system, and its long distance away, it's still difficult to say with certainty what exactly Manitobans should expect, and where.

At this point freezing rain "may potentially bring a large area of freezing rain to portions of southwest Manitoba and the Red River Valley on Sunday," Environment Canada meteorologists say. The expectation at this point is that the system will "blossom eastward as the low progresses."

Areas north of the freezing rain are expected to be slightly colder, and thus the system may bring heavy snowfall for those regions. "North of the freezing rain, snow that has the potential to be heavy will spread from western Manitoba through the Interlake," the statement says.

The national forecaster points out that "There is significant uncertainty with this system due to there being quite a range in weather model solutions regarding timing, temperature, and location."

Environment Canada says that just one degree of temperature difference "will have the potential to greatly change the type of precipitation that will fall."

We will continue to monitor the situation and post updates to our website and app as the system develops. Be prepared to make adjustments to travel plans for Sunday and tune into the radio station for the latest weather reports.

From Environment Canada:

Developing system has the potential to bring freezing rain and snowfall to southern Manitoba this weekend.

A low pressure system that will develop over Alberta on Saturday may potentially bring a large area of freezing rain to portions of southwest Manitoba and the Red River Valley on Sunday. The freezing rain is expected to develop early on Sunday morning and will blossom eastward as the low progresses. North of the freezing rain, snow that has the potential to be heavy will spread from western Manitoba through the interlake.

There is significant uncertainty with this system due to there being quite a range in weather model solutions regarding timing, temperature, and location. Variation in temperature even by a single degree will have the potential to greatly change the type of precipitation that will fall.

Bulletins will be added, adjusted, and ended as necessary as the situation develops.
