More beds and more staff are a couple of the strategies the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is enacting as it deals with an influx of flu sufferers.

WRHA chief health operations officer Krista Williams says they have two key messages for the public: one is that they are taking action, the other is advice for the community.

"There's obviously common strategies that all of us use every single day around preventing the flu: that's good handwashing, that's covering your cough, if you're sick not going into big group gatherings, staying at home, taking care of yourself, drinking lots of fluids," she says.

Williams says there are currently 110 confirmed influenza cases here. Of those cases, 50 are in general hospital beds and another 10 are in intensive care.

"We're really encouraging people to get the flu vaccine. It's a good tool that helps protect you against getting the flu," says Williams.

The WRHA compares these flu numbers to what Winnipeg experienced in 2014-15.
