A man from St. Malo has been charged with second degree murder following the death of an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution.

On January 1 of this year, Stonewall RCMP responded to a report of an Aggravated Assault at Stony Mountain Institution. Officers were advised that a 36-year-old male was found unresponsive in his cell. He was transported to hospital in critical condition. On February 7, RCMP indicated that the 36-year-old had died from his injuries and that his death was being treated as a homicide.

Today, Stonewall RCMP indicated that on March 4th, RCMP Major Crime Services laid charges and obtained arrest warrants for five individuals.

On March 8, 36-year-old Michael Simard of Ontario and 36-year-old Brendin Swanson of Oakbank were arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to aggravated assault.

Then on March 17, 35-year-old Tyler Boily of Thunder Bay was arrested and charged with party to the offence of second degree murder.

And, on Friday of last week, 24-year-old Xavier Rattie of St. Malo and 24-year-old Brandon Ferguson of Winnipeg were both arrested and charged with second degree murder.

RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.
