Students at Grant Park High School in Winnipeg walked out of class this morning in solidarity with kids in the United States, who are protesting against gun violence.

Sunny Enkin Lewis is one of the organizers of the Grant Park walkout. Lewis says their walkout is really about standing in solidarity with student activists and promoting student activism.

"We feel that often students voices are silenced just because they're young, and we wanted to show that students could use their voices to make a change for issues that matter to them," said Lewis.

Lewis says about 1,200 students walked out at Grant Park, and staff was very supportive.

"It was student-led but everyone from the staff was so supportive. The superintendent was supportive, principals... which we think sends a great message that students and adults can work together."

Those who walked out left the school for 17 minutes -- one minute for each person killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida last month.
