Ultra low-cost airline Swoop says a flight bound for Edmonton had to make an emergency landing in Abbotsford, BC Tuesday morning after a bird strike.

The airport manager says flight WO 312 had just lifted off when it ran into a flock of geese and was forced to turn back and land.

One of the passengers says she heard several thuds, saw smoke in the cabin and smelled something burning as the jet returned to the airport on a single-engine.

The WestJet-owned Swoop says the 737 has been removed from service for further inspection and it is recommending travel options for the 176 passengers who were aboard.
