The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is warning the public after narcotics were stolen from an ambulance.

The WFPS says around 3:00 am on November 27th, six vials were taken from an ambulance parked in the St. Boniface Hospital ambulance bay.

The medication includes two vials of the sedative Midazolam and four vials of the deadly opioid Fentanyl.

“If taken without medical supervision these drugs can be extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal,” said WFPS Assistant Chief of Paramedic Operations Ryan Sneath. “We’re not entirely sure how it happened, but it is being investigated by the police.”

Sneath says the vials are usually carried on the paramedic’s person and the ambulances are usually locked when left unattended. He says whether or not proper protocols were followed remains under review.

He adds both drugs – like with all medications – can have deadly results if they are not taken in the proper doses or under medical advice.

“If someone is interacting with a medication and it’s not prescribed to them they should not engage with them,” Sneath said.

Sneath said an internal investigation into the matter is also underway.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating and anyone with information can call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
