A large grass fire in Transcona yesterday kept crews busy for the afternoon.

There's no word on what started the large fire, but officials are warning that conditions are perfect to see more like it. That's why they've banned all fires within city limits for the time being.

The call for yesterday's fire came in before noon and saw a "significant presence" from firefighters, according to a United Firefighters of Winnipeg tweet.

The fire was north of Dugald Rd. and east of Lagimodiere Blvd.

With winds gusting over 70 km/h at times, the fire pushed towards houses and a Transcona school.

With little moisture this spring conditions within city limits are extremely dry. The City of Winnipeg has put in place a temporary ban on issuing open-air burn permits.

They've also put in place a ban on fires in fire pits, both on private and public property when winds are above 25 km/h. The City says that they will lift the ban as soon as conditions improve.
