After two fires caused by block heater electrical failures, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is reminding residents to follow certain safety tips to protect their homes.

The bitter cold temperatures across Manitoba have left residents needing to bundle up and plug in their vehicles overnight.

Despite the freezing temperatures, fires can occur when precautions are not taken. These types of fires are preventable, however, WFPS says.

WFPS reminds residents to follow these safety tips when dealing with block heaters and their vehicles:

  1. Never plug in a vehicle's block heater when it is parked inside a garage. A garage itself will provide adequate shelter for a vehicle in cold weather.

  2. Regularly inspect your extension cord for nicks and frays. If it is damaged, discontinue using it and replace your cord.

  3. Consider any cord you have driven over or accidentally backed out of the driveway while still plugged into damaged.

  4. Cover your block heater plug-in with its protective cover.

  5. Ensure your block heater is inspected each year by a qualified mechanic. If the prongs are damaged, discontinue use and have them replaced.

  6. Ensure salt and road grit is cleaned from the prongs and female end of the cord before plugging in.
