Residents of the northern portion of Winnipeg are cleaning up after an intense storm rolled through the area Thursday evening.

At around 6:45 p.m., Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the City of Winnipeg. The sky quickly turned dark, and areas of Garden City, North Kildonan, West Kildonan and Transcona were hit with strong winds, heavy rain and large hail.

"It was very bad here, said Colby, a resident of Garden City. "I think almost everyone close to us lost windows. Gazebos are flattened, and cars are damaged with hail and broken windows."

She says her kids were watching the storm out the front window of their house with their noses on the glass.

"Suddenly, you couldn't see anything out the window. I kind of panicked and grabbed them, yelling to get out of the way. I was worried a tree was going to come through the window."

She says they ended up with a broken bedroom window, which she believes was caused by hail. Colby also walked outside to find several trees toppled around her home.

In Transcona, hail turned grass white, and streets were left flooded.

Environment Canada is investigating the storm to see exactly what happened.

The system has since rolled out of the province.
