Hurricane Dorian, a powerful category 5 hurricane, caused devastation in the Bahamas in early September 2019.

The United Church of Canada says as of October 31, the generous people of the church have given over $147,000 for church partners working on the ground in affected regions.

The Bahamas District of the Methodist Church of the Caribbean and the Americas, a historic regional partner of the United Church, has used these funds to provide grocery care packages, water filters, and drinking water to community members out of St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

In a letter of thanks addressed to The United Church of Canada, Bishop Theophilus Rolle, president of the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos Islands Conference of the Methodist Church wrote:

"The impact of such a mammoth hurricane on our small islands seems an injustice. But the wonderful resilience of our people and the demonstration of love of our neighbours and partners like you serve as a great equalizer. We are therefore encouraged and strengthened as we move forward with our recovery and reconstruction process, confident that our Jehovah will meet our every need through ways and means that we cannot fathom at this time."
