Snow is already falling in parts of southern Manitoba, but a second system heading for the province on Tuesday will bring even more snow and possibly blizzard conditions.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for all of southern Manitoba as a strong low-pressure system will track along the international border from Tuesday until Wednesday. It's expected to bring more snow and blowing snow to southern Manitoba.

Heavy snow is expected to begin in the southwest Tuesday morning spreading quickly eastward throughout the day and continuing into Wednesday morning. Current guidance indicates most of the south will see 15 to 25 cm of fresh snow and locally higher amounts will be possible. Environment Canada says a swath of 20-25 cm is likely from Minnedosa eastward to Bissett.

In addition, northerly winds gusting 70 to 80 km/h will develop through the day. Significant reductions to visibility in snow and blowing snow will occur at times and blizzard conditions are possible.

There is a risk of freezing rain over areas of Westman, south of the Trans-Canada Highway, Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The snow and winds will both ease Wednesday morning as the system departs to the east.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.

Avoid travel if possible. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.
