A number of severe storms swept through southern Manitoba Wednesday evening, and as storm chaser video shows, tornadoes were close to forming.

Jordan Carruthers from Manitoba Storm Chasers was in the Portage la Prairie area Wednesday night when he captured the video below.

Carruthers says he's not aware of any tornadoes actually forming in the province. However, he says, "There were quite a few severe storms across the province."

Those severe storms included what Carruthers called "monster hail."

Had the storms formed earlier in the day during the peak of the heat it could have been a very different story, Carruthers says.

"(Yesterdays) storms took a little longer to initiate than what we anticipated, so they were unable to take advantage of the outflow boundary and terrain enhancements to make them tornadic, but none the less they were very impressive storms that produced a lot of hail, and some amazing structures."

Heat warnings in place

More hot and muggy weather is in the forecast for the rest of the week for southern Manitoba.

Parts of southwestern Manitoba, including Virden, Souris, and Boissevain are under a Heat Warning. Daytime highs are expected to hover around 32 degrees, with humidex values around 38 degrees.

Southwestern Manitoba could also see more storms Thursday and Friday.

Winnipeg should see a mostly clear sky Thursday, with a forecast high of 30 degrees.
