The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services were kept busy this weekend after attending a rare hazardous incident and three structure fires throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Lagimodiere Blvd. Hazmat incident

At approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, WFPS crews responded to reports of a hazardous materials leak in the 800 block of Lagimodiere Blvd.

Once on the scene, crews assessed the situation before entering the building. Once inside, the leak was safely mitigated and the building was ventilated.

Furby Street fire

Nearly two hours later, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 600 block of Furby St.

When on the scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. They fought the fire from inside the house, declaring the fire under control at 10:16 p.m.

This same house had previously been damaged by a fire last month. As the structural integrity of the house is compromised, WFPS has arranged emergency demolition of the building which was set for Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The house was confirmed to be empty and two firefighters were assessed by paramedics at the scene. They did not require hospital transportation.
