A Winnipeg family is milking their grocery store points for all their worth.

Stéphane Allard says the "hair-brained" idea of donating more than 100 4L milk jugs began with a selfish motive; he wanted to get the best bang for his buck using grocery store points. Stéphane decided the best way to do this was to buy milk.

"Last Friday I started talking to my brother, who is the councillor for St. Boniface. He and I had the idea of liquidating this milk by giving to charity," Stéphane says. "He got on the phone on Friday night and started sending out some messages to see if anybody out there had enough fridge capacity to accommodate all this milk."

The utterly overwhelming amount of milk had homes by the end of Councillor Matthew Allard's calls. This gave Stéphane and his wife Marta the green light to go on a major shopping spree with only one item on their grocery list.

The couple walked into Shoppers Drug Mart on Tuesday morning on a mission. Using the points that he had been collecting, they rang up 123 4L milk jugs at two different stops.

"My wife is very pregnant and she was wheeling around carts of milk in the store," Stéphane laughs.

The jugs were then loaded into his father Julien's truck bed.

His brother pitched in to cover half of the costs, tweeting that the more than 1,000 lbs of milk made its way to Siloam Mission and St. Boniface Street Links. Street Links will be sharing their portion of the donation with the North Point Douglas Women's Centre and the Pan Am Boxing Club.

"It was really just special to be able to do something a little hair-brained and a little ludicrous but it was really fun. I think it was just that much more meaningful to be doing it with my family."

At the end of the day, Stéphane brought home two jugs of milk for his own kids and the hope that his grocery trip inspires others.
